The major objectives of MD-SHRM are to advance the development and role of the professional practice of healthcare risk management by:
- Conducting educational programs and activities to strengthen and develop healthcare risk management and promote professional development.
- Developing professional relationships and providing a medium among members for an exchange of information and solution of mutual problems.
- Providing a forum for the discussion of risk management issues.
- Participating with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), the Association of Maryland Hospitals and Health Systems (MHA) and its affiliates, and other organizations in addressing issues that impact healthcare risk management.

The society offers three categories of membership. The qualifications and dues for each category are as follows:
1. Active Member (voting member)

Any individual who is actively involved in the risk management function in hospitals, managed care organizations, insurance companies, insurance agencies/brokerages, consultancies, academia, legal firm, or other healthcare provider organizations involved in the continuum of care.
2. Subscribing Member (non-voting member)

Any individual or organization that only receives the Society's regular publications.
3. Student Member (non-voting member) ………………
$25.00
Full-time faculty and students registered at an accredited institution and not otherwise eligible for membership above.
